The Adults' Palio
Il Palione
The Palione is the challenge reserved for former pages over 40 from the four historic districts of Cagli. A special event held every four years in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, where Palio veterans return to compete with the same passion and district spirit that has accompanied them throughout their lives.
Those who wore the colors of their district in their youth know that that flame never goes out. The Palione was born precisely from this awareness: an event designed to give veterans back the stage they deserve, allowing those who helped build the history of the Palio to experience it once again as protagonists, not just as spectators.
The four-year frequency makes each edition a special event, awaited with the same trepidation as the main Palio. The four districts -Sant'Agostino, Sant'Angelo, San Francesco, and Sant'Andrea -compete in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti in challenges inspired by Renaissance tradition, in front of an audience that cheers on their heroes of the past.
The Palione is also a moment of collective memory: the stories, victories, and rivalries of decades intertwine in a competition that speaks of roots and belonging. For those who live it, it is not just a game: it is the most authentic way to renew a pact with the city and with their own history.
